Black Kettle National Grassland Hosts 31st Annual Youth Fishing Derby
Hooks Kids on Fishing and the Great Outdoors

Overall Derby Winners: Jax James, Jewel James, Jes Vernon & Cinch Reid

On Saturday June 4, 2022, youth and their families from across Roger Mills County, Western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas gathered at Skipout Lake and Recreation area on the Black Kettle National Grassland for the 31st Annual Kiwanis of Cheyenne Youth Fishing Derby. The derby introduces and promotes fishing and the outdoors to youth and their families, in conjunction with National Free Fishing weekend.

Anglers ranging from 2 to 16 years competed for a variety of prizes in their respective age groups. Kids were able to hook and land 147 fish to include perch/sunfish, bass, crappie, drum, and channel catfish. In addition to fishing, participants were able to show off their rod handling skills in a precision casting contest. For the third year, the derby featured a special category of tagged fish. Prior to the start of the derby staff from the U.S. Forest Service Black Kettle National Grassland and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation captured, tagged, and released about fifty fish. The event was a huge success due to the generous donations from the following local businesses and civic groups: Kiwanis Club of Cheyenne, Security State Bank, Martin’s Trading Post, Johnny Mc’s, Cheyenne Star Newspaper, Market Square Supermarket, Totally Outdoors, Cut-N-Shoot Outdoors, Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, Emergency Management of Cheyenne, Bar S Meats, Zebco Rods and Reels, U.S. Forest Service, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the National Park Service.
