On June 12, 1920 Lester Brannon and Claude Wilson engaged in a difficulty at a ballgame at Durham, during a Grange Picnic, in which Brannon slashed Wilson across the neck with a pocketknife, severing the jugular vein. Dr. Payne, in an effort to save Wilson’s life held the vein until Dr. Wallace could drive from Cheyenne to dress the wound, which required about three hours for Dr. Wallace to make the drive.Wilson died from the effects of the wound on August 14th.
