Durham Fire Destroys Close to 38,000 Acres

Last Tuesday, March 29, 2022, started out as another windy day in western Oklahoma. By afternoon, firetrucks were racing through Cheyenne headed north and west to help with the many fires that were popping up. Fires were reported near Durham, Crawford, Dead Indian Lake, Strong City, Hammon and Sweetwater. The Durham Fire was the largest fire. It was seven miles wide at one point and was kept alive by the dry vegetation and the 30-40 mph southwest winds. During the night, winds shifted to out of the north and the fire raged again.
