Jerry D. Sanders 1934 ~ 2021


Jerry D. Sanders was born October 5th, 1934 in Carter, Oklahoma to Argie Charlene and Harvey William Sanders. He passed away Sunday, April 11th, 2021 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 6 days.
Jerry, as a young child, moved with his family to the Berlin and Grimes, Oklahoma areas before moving to the home place in the New Liberty community. He graduated from New Liberty High School in 1952. After graduation he attended Sayre Junior College and played basketball until 1954 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Japan for two years and also served stateside until his discharge in January of 1958. It was during this time he became more acquainted and started writing letters to a young woman by the name of Carolyn Patten. He was later married to Carolyn (Patten) on June 14, 1958 in Sayre, Oklahoma. To this union two children, Phil and Tina, were born. Throughout the years, the family lived in various cities and states while Jerry worked for Mobil Oil Co. In 1976, Jerry took an early retirement and moved the family “home” to the family farm northwest of Sayre, Oklahoma. He continue to farm and raise cattle and only retired to spend more time and care for wife, Carolyn. For 26 years Jerry was on the Northfork of the Red River Conservation District board in which he served as president along with many other positions. In what spare time he had, he enjoyed woodworking, traveling to attend their grandchildren’s activities and spending time with the rest of his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; step mother, Nana Lou Sanders; sisters-in-law, Jeri Patten and Nelda Burch; brothersin- law, Dean Burch and Joe Harris and one niece, Jeri Burch Cocannouer.
Jerry is survived by his son, Phil Sanders and wife, Laurie, Soldotna, AK; daughter, Tina Blackketter and husband, Lynn, Leedey, OK; grandchildren, Kyle Blackketter and wife, Olivia, Clay Blackketter and wife, Christie, Lindsey Hill and husband, Jake and Ryan Sanders; four great grandchildren, Mila, Henley, Cora Blackketter and Miles Hill; brother, Wayne Sanders and wife, Shirley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Noel Patten, Dwayne and Janita Patten, Ruth Harris, Estelline and Jim Coffey and a host of other nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17th, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at the Sayre United Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Alex Costea. Burial will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery under the direction of Chris Whinery and the staff of Affordable Cremation Service-West. Condolences can be made online at
