Karen Lee Snyder 1948 ~ 2021


Karen Lee Snyder was born June 23, 1948, in Sayre, Oklahoma to Katherine Irene (Miesner) and Harvey Lee Nix. She passed away Monday, July 12, 2021, at her home in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 73 years and 19 days. Karen grew up in Sweetwater community where she attended grade school. She later transferred to Sayre schools where she graduated in 1966. Karen had a 50 plus year nursing history starting as a candy striper at the Sayre Hospital. She worked as a nurse aide after school and summers. She attended Amarillo College and St. Anthony’s Diploma School of Nursing graduating in 1969. During her nursing career she worked in various positions including psychiatry, hospice, and a county nurse just to name a few. She enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1974 where she served at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas as a psychiatry nurse. She was honorably discharged in 1976.
She continued her nursing career and in 1980 when she returned to Oklahoma she worked as the director of nurses at Roger Mills County Memorial Hospital, Sayre Memorial Hospital, Healthwatch Home Health Care, New Season Hospice, Children First Nurse and also the School of Nursing. She retired from Beckham Count Health Department in 2012. She served the community in numerous volunteer positions with the American Red Cross, Heart Association, Crop Walk, American Cancer Society, Medical Reserve Corp, Western Oklahoma Family Care Center, Heart to Heart Pregnancy Care Center, St. Matthew Food Bank & Woman’s Guild, Queen of All Saints Alter Society, Past Eucharistic Minister and a long time member of the St. Matthew Catholic Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Janie Nix; nephew, Jonathan Dusek; mother and fatherin- law, Dayle and Jacquline Snyder.
Karen is survived by her beloved daughter and best friend, Kristina Snyder McWhorter; son-in-law, Lavor McWhorter; Nana of, Bradley Hall, Jennifer Johnston and Connor Hall; Her Snyder family and a host of other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Prayer Vigil services will be held Friday, July 16, 2021 at 6:30 PM at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 10:30 AM also at St. Matthew Catholic Church both services officiated by Father Danny Grover.
