Metcalfe Museum

If you have toured the museum, you have probably seen a picture or two of Augusta and her pet deer Daisy. It is popular with visitors as deer are not normally domesticated in this area. However, Daisy was not the only “pet” deer Augusta had. In 1894, her brother caught a fawn in the garden. It was named Joe. As he grew, he was raised alongside the family dogs. He occasionally returned to the wild but mostly he belonged in the pack with the other collection of animals such as cattle, pigs, turkeys, chickens, dogs, cats, birds and horses. To…
