Doing research on women of the pioneer trail drives, I have found that some of these ladies endured hard times and tragedy. Margaret Hefferner Borland was one. She was widowed four times before the age of 49. Her father and nine other relatives were murdered during the Texas Revolution at the hands of Jose de Uvoas before the attacks of Santa Anna. The remaining family fled to Goliad and later returned home. Not much information is given about Margaret’s husbands, only that her third husband was killed in a pistol duel.
