Elizabeth (Lizzie) Johnson Williams was born in 1840 in Missouri and came to Texas with her parents around the age of four. They settled on Bear Creek in Hayes County where her father established his own school, the Johnson Institute. In her teens, Lizzie earned her teaching degree and became a teacher at the institute. After teaching in several other schools, she opened her own school in South Austin. She wrote stories for “Illustrated Weekly” a popular national magazine.
