Metcalfe Museum

Ma was a woman of many skills. Most people know that she taught both Augusta and Augusta’s son Howard. But Ma also wove bridles from horsehair, crocheted human hair into pictures and ribbons, submitted written stories to magazines for publications, and taught herself how to photograph portraits and landscapes. She was knows to be an entrepreneur at heart and used her skills to help broaden her moneymaking attempts. Perhaps this is where Augusta received some of her artistic ability.
