Cheyenne residents, Scott Martin and Loren Smith serve as Cavalry soldiers with the 7th Cavalry ‘Troop J’ at a reenactment on Sweetwater Creek, north of present-day Wheeler, Texas. Troop J portrays members of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, that patrolled the Western plains for raiding Native Americans to protect the westward movement of pioneers during the late months of 1968. The 7th Cavalry was under the command of Lt. Col. George Custer. Troop J is a volunteer organization, and its primary function is to educate and promote the Washita Battlefield National Historic Stie in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Troop J re-lives this time…
