Velma Switzer, 94, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024. She was born on November 21, 1929 to Grover and Alma McKay in a small homestead west of Leedey. She attended primary school at Three Corner followed by a short time in Long Beach, CA to return to Oklahoma to graduate from Liberty Center in 1947. She played basketball throughout school and would continue to love the sport for years to come. She loved to watch the local teams, especially the ones that included her grandchildren.

She married Charley Switzer, her husband of 59 years on May 30, 1947, in Hammon, and they honeymooned in Elk City to quickly return to the aftermath of the 1947 Tornado. In 1955, they bought a farm west of Leedey, and this is where they would spend the rest of their life together. The farm would be their livelihood which included a working dairy, and a farming and ranching operation. Velma‘s hard work was a vital part of the day to day operations. She was at her happiest when she was outside working and probably most remembered for her cooking by the many people she warmly welcomed into her home.

Velma was a loving and devoted mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother who touched the lives of many. She raised three beautiful children, Charla, Jo Ann, and Mike and dedicated her life to making her kids’ lives better than her own. Her legacy continues to grow with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with each one of them with the hope “that there is a little of her in me.” Velma was a fearless competitor which complemented her kind and gentle nature. This spirit came through playing games like Pitch or Rummy, or while watching her favorite OKC Thunder play.

Velma was an active member of the Leedey Church of Christ for most of her lifetime. She will be remembered by a dear circle of friends from her church family, the Canadian Club, and her travel buddies with whom she enjoyed sports, dining, shopping, and music. The last few years she lived at Brookdale Assisted Living. She was surrounded by a caring staff that loved and cared for her dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Alma McKay, her husband, Charley Switzer, her brother, Roy McKay and his wife Launa and her daughter Charla Allen.

She is survived by her children, Jo Ann and Bob Harrison and Mike and Annie Switzer. Son-in-law Richard Allen. Grandchildren Jennifer (Ken) Dunphy, Richalle (Jason) Cicioni, Kari (Dave) Redman, Richanne Kegans, Alicia (Jimmy) Stotts, Dr. Emily (Alex) Switzer, Elana (Mike) Bray, and CharLee (Matt) Mallory. Great Grandchildren Kyle Dunphy, Katie Dunphy, Raylee Kegans, Jackson Redman, Anthony Cicioni, Tait Kegans, Isabella Cicioni, Wyatt Redman, Olivia Stotts and Marcus Cicioni. Velma is also survived by a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
