You may have noticed more ‘construction’ has occurred at the recently completed Overlook and Trailhead facilities. After reviewing blueprints and consulting experts, we wanted to “ensure that all people, including…citizens with disabilities, have the highest level of accessibility” (National Park Service [NPS] Director’s Order #42). “The NPS is beholden to the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) rather than the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),” says Michael Whiteman-Jones, our Regional Accessibility Coordinator. “The ABA and ADA are very similar, but the ABA is a little stricter because we’re a federal agency expected to set an example.” We determined that the space surrounding…
