Wendell Ray Herndon 1933 ~ 2022

Wendell Ray Herndon was born on September 13th, 1933 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Beatrice (Armstead) and Orvey Roy Herndon. He passed away in his home Thursday, January 6th, 2022 in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 24 days.

Wendell grew up in the Elk City area and attended school at Merritt graduating in 1953. After graduation he was married to Delphelenia (Horstkoetter) before he enlisted in the United States Army where he served stateside at Ft. Benning, Georgia. After serving for 4 years he obtained his discharge and continued to serve another 4 years in the National Guard. They moved to Midland, Texas where he worked for his uncle with Texas Electric. They returned to the Hammon area where they raised their family and made their home. Wendell held various jobs throughout the years but most notably was the shop foreman for a number of years at Red Johnson Ford and trained at Golden Gloves Boxing. After Delphelenia suddenly passed in 2001, he was married to June (Bentley) in Elk City, Oklahoma on June 15th, 2001. They lived in various places in Texas and Oklahoma before returning to Elk City in May of 2013. Wendell enjoyed life, working at his dairy in his younger days, loved being outside, tinkering on motors, fishing, and traveling.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Delphelenia; 1 son, Claude Ray Herndon and 2 brothers, Orvey Joe and Butch Herndon.

Wendell is survived by his wife, June, of the home; 4 children, Johnny Herndon, Nancy Cockran and husband, Danny, Nathan Zimmerman and wife, Naomi and Linda Bridge and husband, Robert; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 brothers, Damon Herndon; 3 sisters, Sally, Virginia, and Nell and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at the Community Church in Hammon, Oklahoma officiated by Dolan Ivy.
